when you take seven people, two bowling lanes and two hours time? Fun, and plenty of it.
On May 1, 2004 seven brave souls from Western Mass. No Kids gathered at the AMF Chicopee bowling center to partake of an AMF "Fun Pack" experience. The concept had been suggested by Linda and Matt (aka CallieMo and SirGeek here on the site) who have been bowling on a league for about two years now. The rest of the gang: Linda (aka Lumlum on the site, who is the WMNK coordinator), John, Peg, Dave and Mike all had not bowled in many years.
After a quick round of warm-up shots, the games began. The ladies bonded together to play against the men, who outnumbered them. Linda/CallieMo was playing about 10 pins below her normal 122 average. Linda/Lumlum gave a decent showing despite not having picked up a bowling ball in many years. Peg managed a nice overall average score of 109.
Matt/SirGeek overall was about 19 pins below his 134 average. Dave gallantly threw the game so his wife (Peg) could beat him, what a nice guy! (That's this reporter's story and I'm sticking to it!) Mike was briefly possessed during the middle game, giving him a nice 121 score for it. John gave it the old college try and managed a decent 93 average for the night.
Despite the friendly rivalry between the sexes, much laughter, encouragement and free advice was to be found. After the bowling, several of the members proceeded to the local Friendlys' to grab a bite to eat and chat further.
To anyone who hasn't attended a Western Mass. No Kids event yet, get out and come to one. The people are friendly and the conversations are interesting. You'll be glad you went.
